Description:
A synthesizer that recreates the periodic table of elements.
COLAPSO is not a synthesizer you program; it is a synthesizer you explore. Choose an element, interact with it, and see what it yields—sounds that exist somewhere between an instrument and a natural phenomenon, never fully settling into a static state.
Overview:
COLAPSO is an additive synthesizer whose harmonic content is determined by measurement. Select an element, and its emission lines become the overtones of the note you play.
COLAPSO is a sonic interpretation of the uncertainty principle. A sound can be precise in time or precise in pitch, but never both simultaneously—and a single parameter, “Observation,” determines which one takes precedence. Whatever you do not measure, you hear in a blurred state.
The Gabor limit, as a control.
The uncertainty principle states that we cannot simultaneously know both the position and the momentum of an electron with absolute precision. The more precisely we know one, the less we know about the other.
Sound works in exactly the same way. To perceive pitch, we require time. If we begin to shorten that time interval, the sound ceases to be continuous and transforms into a sequence of discrete moments—collapsing into an impulse. Between these two extremes lies an entire sonic territory, and that is precisely where COLAPSO resides.
LFOs and envelopes—drawn by you.
There are four LFOs and four envelope generators, each defined by a shape that you draw yourself rather than selecting from a preset list. Click to add a node, drag it to reposition, or curve the line between two nodes. Then, simply drag the source onto any control marked with a “+” sign.
Each LFO can be initialized using a sine, triangle, sawtooth, square, or sample-and-hold (S&H) waveform, and can be set to evolve in any direction you choose. “Quantise” reads the signal step-by-step, like a sequencer, while “Smooth” rounds it out; it can operate freely, sync to the tempo, retrigger with every note, or fire just once.
The envelope is constructed in a similar fashion, covering attack, decay, sustain, and release stages: transform the attack into a rise, add a second ascent during the decay phase, and shape the tail. Each stage can last anywhere from 1 ms to 8 seconds, with the speed scalable to your preference.
LFOs, envelopes, and aftertouch operate independently for each voice, allowing individual notes within a chord to evolve in their own distinct ways.
Key features include:
Up to 8 voices · Polyphonic, monophonic, and unison modes, complete with detuning, glissando, and legato.
03 oscillators per voice, each capable of generating up to 16 overtones.
22 building-block elements for each oscillator, with an additional layer to transform them into complex oscillator structures.
9 filter circuits per voice—ranging from SVF and ladder filters to comb and formant filters—featuring drive and key-tracking capabilities.
4 custom-drawn envelopes (attack, decay, and release), with each stage lasting from 1 ms to 8 seconds · EG 1 is assigned to the amplifier, while EG 2 is assigned to the filter. 06 4 LFOs, which can be drawn in or loaded from presets, with a frequency range of 0.01 to 40 Hz or tempo-synced; features include quantization, smooth frequency transitions, one-shot mode, and key-triggered operation.
07 2 insert effects, configurable in any order from a selection of 8 types; 1 send effect (fed by each oscillator) including chorus, phaser, delay, or reverb.
08 Glue compressor on the master output bus.
09 MIDI learn; host sync, MIDI clock, or Ableton Link support.
