Terrain is a multifunctional software synthesizer and sound design environment.
It integrates multiple synthesis methods, sample-based playback, modular routing, a powerful modulation system, and built-in effects.
In essence, it is not merely a synthesizer with a collection of presets, but a complete sound laboratory for crafting your own unique timbres.
Eight Oscillators and Eight Synthesis Engines
Each of the eight oscillators can operate in one of eight modes:
– Wavetable – wavetables with variable timbres.
– Sample – sample playback.
– Granular – granular synthesis, transforming sound into shifting clouds of texture.
– FM – frequency modulation for complex digital timbres.
– Resynth – sound resynthesis.
– Harmonic – manipulation of harmonic content.
– Modal – modeling of resonant and percussive timbres.
– Organics – a library of acoustic instruments.
Extensive Sound Library
The package includes 500 wavetables, 2,177 one-shot samples, and 74 acoustic instruments. It features basses, keyboards, bells, pads, percussion, atmospheric textures, and sounds inspired by analog synthesizers.
You can also import your own audio to use as a sample, convert it into a wavetable, or process it via the Resynth engine.
Patcher – Modular Sound Architecture
A key feature of Terrain is the ability to connect oscillators, filters, effects, and modulators using virtual cables.
You can construct custom processing chains and create complex, multi-layered patches that go far beyond the scope of standard subtractive synthesis. Four modules for dynamic processing:
– Shaper – draw custom curves to modulate volume, filter, panning, distortion, and other parameters.
– Glitch – create repeats, stutters, tape stops, freezes, and random glitches.
– Arp – a step-based arpeggiator with control over pitch, octaves, gate length, and trigger probability.
– Robin – distribute notes across oscillators in sequential, random, or alternating order.
All four tools help create lively, unpredictable sounds that evolve rhythmically.
Deep modulation system
Users have access to 10 LFOs, 5 envelopes, 9 macros, and full MPE support. Modulators can be assigned to almost any relevant parameter, such as filter cutoff, wavetable position, distortion, panning, effect depth, and more.
This enables the creation of sounds that are constantly in flux rather than remaining static.
Sixteen built-in effects
The collection includes Reverb, Delay, Distortion, Granular, Filter, Chorus, Flanger, Phaser, Tape, Equalizer, Widen, Compress, Multiband, Bode, Splitter, and Utility.
Effects can be chained in any order and placed at various points within the modular signal path. This is ideal for complex sound design, spatial processing, and building experimental effect chains. Additionally, these effects can be used independently as standalone plug-ins.
