Three types of seals visit the New Zealand coastline, but the most common is the fur seal (Kekeno).
These fur seals can grow to weigh up to 160 kg and are fearsome-sounding creatures. Consequently, I made these recordings using the longest microphone boom pole I could find; I wanted material to use as components for creature vocalizations, but I certainly didn’t want to get bitten (my Rycote survived at least a dozen bites!)
