Description:
The ultimate, most powerful “Lately Bass.” A compact FM synthesizer with four operators.
Overview:
Released in 1987, the Yamaha TX81Z is a 4-operator FM synthesizer housed in a 1U rack unit. Conceived as an affordable way to introduce more musicians to FM synthesis—pioneered by the 6-operator DX7—this compact instrument nonetheless boasts features absent even in its larger siblings: while early FM synths offered only sine waves, each operator on the TX81Z can choose from eight different waveforms. Combined with the characteristics of its analog circuitry, this gives the synth a sound quite distinct from the DX7.
Above all, the “Lately Bass” preset is the sound that cemented the TX81Z’s place in music history. With its distorted harmonics, razor-sharp tone, and powerful low end, it became a staple of countless hits from the late 80s and 90s, particularly in dance music. Programming it from the front panel was never easy, but thanks to its affordable price and iconic sounds, it earned a place in the studios of countless musicians—including the developer of this plugin.
