The hulusi is a Chinese open-reed blowpipe with a gourd-shaped chamber. It was originally used by the Daizu or Dai (Thai) people of southern China. The hulusi typically consists of three bamboo pipes: one melody pipe with finger holes and two drone pipes, often tuned to an octave and a fifth.
Love Flute
The hulusi’s sound is mesmerizingly beautiful, but rather quiet. Dai men played it to express their love for women, while others often played the hulusi in the fields while resting from planting or harvesting. The instrument’s expressiveness is achieved through vibrato.
Stage A
To convey the impressive atmosphere of Synchron Stage’s “Stage A,” our engineers used seven phase-coherent microphone configurations, covering a wide range of room acoustics. All signals are available as separate channels in the Vienna Synchron Player mixer section. A wide selection of presets offers ideal mixer settings and serves as an excellent starting point for creating your own sound compositions.
Virtuoso Performance
The hulusi was played by multi-instrumentalist, folk instrument expert, and member of the Synchron Stage orchestra, Veronika Vitazkova. She has performed in numerous orchestras, including the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Tonkunstler Orchestra.
