Arturia Pure SUB is a software bass synthesizer consisting of three independent layers: sub-bass (fundamental), harmonics, and texture.
Each layer is generated and processed separately before passing through a shared filter, effects chain, and output stage.
Its architecture is designed specifically for creating electronic basslines—including 808s, sub-basses, and Reese basses, as well as distorted and textured variations.
The Sub section controls level, phase, and pitch independently of the harmonic components.
“Sub Regen” is a special function that processes the entire signal using filters, distortion, and effects, then replaces only the low frequencies
of the output signal with a clean, phase-stable version of the original fundamental tone; this ensures consistent amplitude when played back
on sound systems.
The Harmonics section includes two modules: “Pressure,” which generates low-density harmonic components
using a dedicated waveform editor, and “Reese,” which generates wide, high-density unison tones.
A dedicated Pitch Envelope shapes the attack and pitch movement independently of the amplitude envelope, while a key-tracked
equalizer ensures consistent timbre across the entire register.
The Texture section adds a third layer via two modes:
“Texture,” which blends noise samples into the signal using ring modulation, amplitude modulation, or distortion;
and “Corroder,” which adds noise, sine, sawtooth, or square wave sources at either a fixed frequency or a frequency
linked to the keyboard.
All three layers can be independently routed to the filter.
The filter section offers over 40 modes. Following the filter is a sub-processor featuring 33 modes for distortion, tonal shaping, and saturation, along with a global volume control and six macros for timbre sculpting. A 12-slot effects rack—offering 18 available effects—provides further processing capabilities, with the option to save presets for each rack. A maximizer at the end of the chain offers Soft (transparent) and Hard (aggressive/clipping) modes, as well as EQ, compression, and multiband processing.
Modulation features include three envelopes, six flexible modulator slots (supporting envelope, function, random sequence, step sequencer, and voice modulator sources), four assignable macros, modulation side-chaining (where one source controls the depth of another), key-based expression (velocity, key tracking, mod wheel, aftertouch, release velocity), and MPE support (including slides). The plugin comes with 300 factory presets and in-app tutorials.
