Overview:
In the original amplifier, the signal passes through an input tube and an output tube, with a passive equalizer situated between them. In the ESTER amplifier, the functions performed by those tubes—density, harmonics, and the dynamic response where the sound changes upon impact and takes time to return to its initial state—are combined into a single tube stage preceding the equalizer (like a preamp stage). This preserves the characteristics of both tube types historically used in the original unit.
This configuration was chosen deliberately. If the tube were placed after the equalizer, any boost would drive it harder, forcing you to readjust the saturation whenever you tweaked a specific frequency band. With the tube placed before the equalizer, color and timbre become separate parameters: you set the drive level once using the INPUT TRIM and then adjust the EQ freely. The saturation level remains as you set it, the EQ curves stay exactly where you placed them, and the equalizer can also shape the harmonics—the HIGH CUT can smooth out the harshness added by heavy drive, while the LOW CUT can reduce the low-end weight it creates.
The tube located between the channel rows serves as the amplifier’s own metering device, displaying the harmonic content actually being generated. The SAT control bypasses the saturation circuit entirely without altering your settings. Two tubes, two chapters of history: the ESTER emulates the 6072A and 6N1P tubes.
A switch on the top panel toggles the amplifier between these two tubes, which offer distinct sonic profiles. The 6072A engages earlier and gradually increases in intensity across the entire INPUT
TRIM range. The 6N1P remains clean for longer, then rapidly transforms, becoming more aggressive in the upper frequency spectrum. Both settings share the same loudness, so switching alters the character rather than the volume. The new unit features a 6072A tube.
INPUT TRIM — a single control for the entire tube stage
The INPUT TRIM adjusts the signal level entering the tube within a ±24 dB range; this single knob governs everything regarding sonic saturation. In a tube amplifier, increasing harmonic content and enhancing the tube’s inherent tonal characteristics are inseparable concepts. The unit compensates for its own throughput level, meaning INPUT TRIM controls sound density and coloration rather than volume; this allows for A/B comparisons based on sonic character rather than loudness.

Five filters per channel—LOW CUT, LOW BOOST, MID CUT, HIGH BOOST, and HIGH CUT—each with its own calibrated scale. The frequency selectors are true rotary switches that click into place at marked positions rather than moving continuously between them, ensuring your favorite settings are easily repeatable. By design, the curves are broad and smooth, serving to balance the mix rather than merely accentuate it.
Five filters, one network
Managing a single filter is only half the story. In a passive EQ, the sections share a common network; consequently, the resulting curve from all five sections combined is not simply the sum of the individual curves. Adjusting one affects the others, and this interaction defines the EQ’s signature sound. ESTER preserves both aspects: the individual filter response and the aggregate curve they form together faithfully replicate the original. This defines the sound of the entire unit—not just the passive network; the quiet, linear sound of the amplifiers and transformers plays a part, too—and the resulting sonic character is unmistakably ESTER.
Low frequencies: boosting and cutting
LOW BOOST provides up to +16 dB of gain at 20, 40, 60, 100, or 140 Hz. LOW CUT offers up to −18 dB of attenuation at 30, 40, 100, or 400 Hz. These two controls operate a single passive network, and a classic technique involves using them in tandem: boosting and cutting within the same frequency region to create weight at the bottom while opening up space above. No standard shelving filter can achieve this effect.
MID CUT: handling the rest
Up to −16 dB of attenuation at 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, or 700 Hz. The curve is broad, so a cut of two or three decibels opens up the entire midrange rather than leaving a hollow gap. When combined with LOW BOOST, this employs a time-honored EQ technique: boosting the lows while attenuating the upper-lows/low-mids.
