The gajdica is an archaic instrument preserved in Lipany, a rural village in the Šariš region of Slovakia. This single-rope instrument consists of a wooden tube made of hazel, elder, cherry, plum, or maple, with a cow horn attached to the lower end.

Pastoral Origins
The gajdica has six holes on the top of the melody reed and a seventh on the back. It was originally used to play short pastoral melodies and shepherd’s songs of the Šariš region, to give shepherd’s signals, and to accompany the unique dance of shepherd culture. The sound of the haidyka is penetrating, rich, and intense. Its playing style, with circular breathing and accents on melodic notes, resembles a single-pipe bagpipe. A unique, very fast vibrato gives the instrument a unique character.

Stage A
To convey the impressive atmosphere of Synchron Stage’s “Stage A,” our engineers used seven phase-coherent microphone configurations, covering a wide range of room acoustics. All signals are available as separate channels in the Vienna Synchron Player mixer section. A wide selection of presets offers ideal mixer settings and serves as an excellent starting point for creating your own sounds.

Virtuoso Performance
The haidyka was played by multi-instrumentalist, folk instrument expert, and member of the Synchron Stage orchestra, Veronika Vitazkova. She has performed with many orchestras, including the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Tonkunstler Orchestra.
