In October 1952, Wireless World magazine published a tone control circuit featuring two controls and an equalizer placed within the feedback loop of a tube amplifier. While the industry retained the circuit’s topology, it redesigned everything else. The R52 represents the original circuit itself: the SP61 pentode within the loop, the published component values, and the specific operating conditions Baxandall specified—including the source and amplifier impedances at the far end of the signal chain, now placed right at your fingertips.
Key Features:
A single network, not two separate bands. The LOW and HIGH frequency controls act as two arms of the same feedback circuit; consequently, adjusting one alters the operating conditions for the other. Boost both controls, and the midrange recedes; cut both, and the midrange comes forward. The SCOPE display visualizes this interaction as you make adjustments.
The amplifier stage is integrated within the equalizer circuit.
The tube stage is not merely a saturation circuit placed after the filter; it sits within the feedback loop that defines the frequency curve. This means the signal level directly shapes the tone: the INPUT control determines the intensity of the tube’s character, while the high-frequency boost applies that tube coloration specifically to the boosted range. Low levels yield a clean sound, high levels produce coloration, and there is no abrupt clipping point between the two states.
It all comes down to your touch.
Historically, source and load impedances depended on the specific equipment in use. The R52 brings these parameters to the front panel: SOURCE selects the driving impedance for the network, LOAD determines how firmly the amplifier drives a 15-ohm load, and SHELF toggles between two published high-frequency response curves.

CHANNELS
Any number of channels, from mono to immersive, with one modeled tube circuit per channel. On the stereo bus, CHANNEL MODE toggles between STEREO, MID, SIDE, L, and R modes; the ISOL function allows monitoring of a single component.

1952 — original circuit based on the SP61 pentode. 1957 — later circuit based on the ECC81 dual triode. 1957 ALT — 1957 circuit using the SP61 pentode.
TONE
BASS and TREBLE: continuous adjustment from −1 to +1, displayed in thousandths for precise recall. SHELF: continuous adjustment; the 1952 setting falls between two published Baxandall high-frequency values.
SOURCE
0 Ω to 250 kΩ. The 1952 operating range ends at 10 kΩ and is marked on the dial. Default setting: 0 Ω.
LOAD
OFF, 0.7, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and 7.0 Ω — output impedance of the amplifier connected to a fixed 15 Ω monitor load. OFF — complete stage bypass. Default setting: OFF.
AMP
Amplifier within the LOAD signal path. Requires LOAD to be engaged; available only for stereo and mono instances (not MID, SIDE, L, or R). Operates in real-time at session sample rates up to 96 kHz; at higher rates, it uses a “freeze,” render, and export mode, while the LOAD path is used for real-time monitoring. Settings are saved with presets, sessions, and A/B slots. Consumes more CPU resources than the standard signal path.
PASSIVE PROCESSOR
IN/OUT ensures bit-accurate transmission, click-free operation, and consistent latency, meaning active and passive modes share the same latency.
LATENCY
91 samples at 44.1 and 48 kHz (approx. 2 ms), 71 samples at 88.2 and 96 kHz, 0 samples at 176.4 and 192 kHz. Reported to the host; compensation is applied automatically.
OVERSAMPLING
Always enabled; the rate automatically adjusts to the session sample rate. No user control; no low-latency analog mode.
PRECISION
64-bit floating-point. Re-rendering the same session yields identical files.
AUTOMATION
Bass, Treble, Band-pass filter, Source Impedance, Input Level (dB), Output Level (dB), In/Out, and Load are all automatable. MATCH, VERSION, and CHANNEL MODE are saved with the session but are not automatable.
PRESETS
Standard .R52Preset files located in a shared folder, read by the browser in real-time: /Users/Shared/Pulsar Modular/R52 Baxandall/Presets on macOS; C:\Users\Public\Documents\Pulsar Modular\R52 Baxandall\Presets on Windows. The “Default” preset loads upon every new instance.
