About the Tool
Morin khuur – the instrument has two strings: “male”, made from 130 hairs from the tail of a racehorse, and “female”, on which 105 hairs from the tail of a mare go – these are symbols of the male and female principles. According to the Mongolian tradition, the hair of the “male” string must necessarily be from the tail of a fast racehorse, so that the agility of the animal is transferred to the instrument. Recently, some players prefer nylon strings. The strings are tuned mostly to the fourth, but sometimes to the fifth. In Mongolia, the system of the instrument is Fa, B-flat of a small octave (E-flat, B-flat), in Inner Mongolia, the system is G of a small octave, C to the first octave. The bow is wooden, arched, with a freely suspended horsehair tuft, but western-style bows with a hair tension mechanism are also popular. The tuning pegs in Mongolia are of the traditional simple conical type, in Inner Mongolia they are mechanical, with a worm screw, providing an easier and smoother tuning, without subsequent loosening of the tuning pegs.
The sound production is harmonic, without pressing the strings to the fretboard. The strings are clamped by the outer side of the nails of the index and middle fingers of the left hand and the grown nails of the ring finger and little finger. The thumb serves to support the neck of the instrument and is rarely used to clamp the strings. The bow is held in the right hand – the palm holds the bow from below, the thumb is placed on the block, the index and middle fingers clasp the cane, and the ring and little fingers are placed on the hair of the bow with pillows from the inside and, if necessary, pull them.
The morin khuure is played while seated, with the trapezoidal body between the knees and the neck held at an upward angle. Traditionally, this is a male instrument, widely used both for solo performance and for accompaniment. It is especially important for accompaniment in the performance of “lingering songs” and epic tales. It was not used in monastic music.
Morin khuur was the first to bring it to Europe by Marco Polo, who received it as a gift in 1275 while visiting Shangdu, the “summer capital” of the Yuan dynasty.
