The shakuhachi is a Japanese and ancient Chinese end-blown flute made of bamboo. Its five fingerholes are tuned to a minor pentatonic scale without semitones, but the pitch can be adjusted downwards and upwards using the meri and kari techniques, which adjust the blowing angle.

Distinctive Vibrato
The shakuhachi’s unique sound is unmistakable, characterized by an emotional, airy note. Two types of vibrato add variety and expressiveness to long notes. Typical elements include grace notes, bends, and a very distinctive attack when playing a note, as well as expressive playing techniques such as dynamic trills and characteristic grace notes.

Stage A
To convey the impressive atmosphere of Synchron Stage’s “Stage A,” our engineers used seven phase-coherent microphone configurations, covering a wide range of room acoustics. All signals are available as separate channels in the Vienna Synchron Player mixer section. A wide selection of presets offers ideal mixer settings and serves as an excellent starting point for creating your own sounds.

Virtuoso Performance
The shakuhachi was played by multi-instrumentalist, folk instrument expert, and member of the Synchron Stage orchestra, Veronika Vitazkova. She has performed in numerous orchestras, including the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Tonkunstler Orchestra.
