    Anyone curious about the roots of dance rhythms I’d recommend discovering “clave”;
    a 5-beat 2-measure phrase that is the SEED of all music that compels a physical response to the music. Once you get it, you’ll experience a new approach to composing and playing.
    I’ll be surprised if it isn’t covered in this but if not, it is literally what drives the bass parts, and also fantastic for locating accents (i.e., horn stabs). It is literally a powerful force; either played verbatim by the instrument “claves”, block, or bell, OR inferred, with no instrument actually playing it, its power is equal.
    Considering it was invented centuries ago by the Yoruba nation of Nigeria for ritual dances, it is a mathematical system unto itself. It is “in your face” in salsa, Latin jazz, merengue, etc. but just as much from rock to bluegrass. Just about anyone who picks up a guitar to bang out some chords is 99% of the time playing with clave as the backbeat. There are styles of music in which you’ll be hard pressed to find clave, but if it makes you dance, it’s built on clave.
    And thanks for this, amigo!
