The cimbasso provides a rich, focused low brass sound, often used in Italian opera by composers such as Giuseppe Verdi and Giacomo Puccini as an alternative to the tuba. Its focused tone adds clarity and depth to the brass sections without drowning them out. Recorded pristine in our dedicated Silent Stage studio with its dense, controlled acoustics, this instrument brings its distinctive low-frequency tonality to your studio.

Opera Low Brass

The term “cimbasso” originated in Italy in the early 19th century, likely as an abbreviation for corno in basso (bass horn). Despite its name, the cimbasso belongs to the tuba family and is commonly used by tuba players. Its timbre is remarkably uniform throughout its range, without abrupt transitions between registers. The overall sound is soft, warm, rich, and resonant. As a unique alternative to the tuba, the cimbasso is a popular choice in opera and symphonic music, offering depth of sound without the broad resonance of the traditional tuba.

Versatility and Expressiveness

The library contains a full range of expressive and dynamic articulations, offering a variety of short and long notes, legato (including fast legato), crescendo and diminuendo, sfz, sffz, pfp, and flutter tongue. Recording samples in relatively dry form on the Silent Stage allows you to place them anywhere in your virtual stage and stereo field, and integrate the instrument with the Synchron series using the internal convolution reverb, recreating our own Vienna Synchron Stage.
