Daft Punk is a French electronic music duo formed in 1993 by Thomas Bangalter and Guild-Manuel de Homem Christo.
They achieved significant success by the end of the nineties on the wave of the house music movement in France, creating their own sound, mixing elements of electro, house, disco and synthpop. They had a significant influence on the formation of French house itself.
At the dawn of their career, the band members were strongly influenced by such groups as The Beach Boys and The Rolling Stones. Initially, Bangalter and de Homem-Christo formed a band called Darlin’, which broke up after a short time, allowing the members to pursue their musical experiments individually. The duo revived as Daft Punk, releasing the acclaimed album Homework in 1997. The 2001 release, Discovery, was even more successful, featuring the club singles “One More Time”, “Digital Love” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger”. In March 2005, the duo released their third album, Human After All, which received a mixed reception from critics. Despite this, the singles “Robot Rock” and “Technologic” were successful in the UK. In 2006–2007, Daft Punk went on a musical tour, after which they released the live album Alive 2007, which received a Grammy for Best Electronic/Dance Album. In 2010, the duo wrote the music for the film Tron: Legacy and released a soundtrack album for it. Daft Punk are renowned for their elaborate live shows, in which visual elements and special effects are integrated with the music. An important part of their work is the visual component of the storytelling, intertwined with the music, such as wearing bizarre robot costumes in public and during live performances.
