The Japanese company Roland set out to create the perfect clean-sounding amplifier and chose a transistor, which remains legendary and one of the benchmarks for the finest clean tones.
It’s certainly a completely different feel and sound if you’re accustomed to tube amps. Not better or worse, just different and very, very musical. Many 80s bands used it to achieve clean tones across various genres, and Metallica was no exception.
Surprisingly, distortion, crunch, and overdrive pedal sounds sound really good as long as the transistor isn’t out of control and the gain is balanced.
