“Hamsa Arabic Percussion” by Earth Moments is a unique collection of percussion inspired by the beats and instruments of the Middle East and Arabic culture. This essential percussion has been optimized with the utmost attention to detail, remaining faithful to the sounds of nearly 300 authentic, royalty-free samples. This library of ethnic and “Oriental” grooves contains a wide range of traditional and unconventional grooves and beats from countries as diverse as Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Jordan, Yemen, Israel, and Greece.
The pack is divided into instruments and playing styles.
Instruments:
The darbuka is a goblet-shaped instrument, one of the most common and popular percussion instruments used in the Middle East. It produces a resonant, low-pitched, sustained sound when played lightly with the fingertips and palm.
Doholla – A large goblet-shaped instrument. It produces a deeper, lower-pitched sound than the Darbuka. The Doholla is typically bass-based and has a deep, rich tone.
Rik – A type of tambourine used in Arabic music. Made of a wooden frame, jingle, and a thin, translucent goatskin head. It is played using the Maksoum rhythm, a very popular Egyptian rhythm. Originating from many Eastern grooves and songs, the Maksoum rhythm is extremely versatile – it can be played slowly for classical Arabic music or fast for dance.
Fox – A cheerful dance rhythm, played in 2/4 time, widely used in Turkish and Eastern European music.
Karatchi – Originally from Pakistan, the fast rhythm is commonly used in modern Egyptian and North African music.
Malfuf – Originally from Egypt and Lebanon. A fast 2/4 rhythm is often played as an introduction to classical orchestral pieces, created specifically for the entrance and exit of a belly dancer.
Masmudi – The Masmoud are a tribe from North Africa. This very simple rhythm is played in 8/4 time with various variations created for solos, rolls, and fills. Falahi – Falaah means “country folk” or “farmer” in Arabic. A very fast rhythm used in folk dances, originating from Egypt. Played in 6/8 time (Morocco). The Moroccan style is very hypnotic. Patterns typically have unusual swings that create hypnotic, repetitive timbres.
Fusion – Arabic patterns mixed with a Western feel were designed to fit seamlessly with Western music, adding Middle Eastern flavor.
