Dyad: Hand Pan Drums is a virtual instrument sample library that gives producers the ability to create professional, emotive handpan performances.
A handpan ecosystem designed for the modern creator
Dyad: Hand Pan Drums is a virtual instrument sample library that gives producers the ability to create professional, emotive handpan performances.
To achieve this, we created the Dyad Engine: an innovative interface featuring pattern players for both the “left” and “right” hands that work in tandem to emulate the capabilities of a master player. This playback engine handles melodic and percussive hits, articulation switching, swing, humanization, and micro-rhythms for added expressiveness.
With an extensive library of ready-made and customizable patterns, composers can focus on mood, melody, harmony, and rhythm rather than mouse clicks. To enhance the mystical, cinematic sound of Dyad: Hand Pan Drums, the library offers options to play over drones and nature sounds, as well as to reinforce the percussion with additional instruments.
So, whether you are a beginner or a seasoned professional, the Dyad Engine and its vast sound library will help you create handpan music that is both beautiful and expressive.
“Dyad”: what it means and what it means for you
Derived from the Greek word dyas—meaning “the number two”—a dyad is a pair of forces functioning as a single unit. The Dyad Engine brings this concept to life. By mirroring a percussionist’s symmetry through dedicated pattern engines for the “left” and “right” hands, you can bring authentic handpan playing techniques to your music—all playable via a single key (and yes: you can play handpans just like a piano if you wish).
What makes the sound of handpans so special?
It is a sonic chameleon. The handpan is an instrument that blends elements of “futuristic antiquity”: its sound is deeply rooted in the past, yet it is a product of modern craftsmanship, having first appeared in the early 2000s as the “Hang” or “Hang drum.”
It is made of steel but played with the fingers, lending an organic warmth to the metallic tone. Its versatility—capable of producing sounds that are dark, peaceful, melancholic, uplifting, melodic, percussive, unusual, or familiar—makes it suitable for a wide range of musical genres.
Use it for calm, lyrical, and grounded arrangements, or to create a sense of unease and tension worthy of a film score… and everything in between.
So, what exactly does the Dyad Pattern Player do?
It does a great deal. Specifically, it provides a musical system to manage nearly 1,000 samples for each percussion instrument. Why so many samples? Because every note is recorded using six different types of strikes (articulations), each featuring a wide dynamic range (velocity) and multiple repetitions (round-robin playback) to ensure a natural, human sound.
Add to this six types of percussive “body” hits, with key articulations recorded for both the left and right hands. The engine gives you access to all this complexity in mere moments, helping you create and perform parts that would be virtually impossible using any other method.
