Description : Step beyond the ordinary with an extraordinary piano.
The otherworldly often necessitates all manner of trickery and sleight of hand. For this release, however, we decided to forgo the gimmicks
and create a unique, highly playable piano using “performance design.” It all began with a simple experiment
involving “palm muting” (placing a hand on the strings to dampen the sound and produce a dark, weighty piano tone).
We spent a week at Castlesound Studios dismantling and reassembling various resonant elements of the piano
to craft a new instrument full of surprises. The library’s producer and performer, Christian Henson, asked himself:
“What would a piano sound like if it were built from scratch by Caractacus Potts?” (the eccentric inventor from Ian Fleming’s Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang).
The result is an instrument that lets you control these various elements—or “partials,” as we call them—
allowing you to either set and forget your favorite tonal profile or use them to add expressiveness to your performance
or recording in real time. The five core elements of this mystical piano (with full balance control) are: palm muting,
a combination of plucked elements (depending on the active dynamic layer), finger-plucking, a rubber spoon, and a guitar pick.
Isolated sustains, including octave harmonics and damper resonances. A unique finger tremolo that
layers performance articulations based on the dynamic level. And finally, muted triggers for sound extraction, designed to highlight the nature of this audio-innovative instrument—a creation characteristic of Karatak Potts. Everything was recorded using extensive round-robins, dynamic layers, and a dedicated sample set for piano pedal resonance.
