Description: Surge XT is a free, open-source synthesizer that combines multiple synthesis methods—including subtractive and FM—offering sound designers immense flexibility in sound creation. Each patch features two independent “scenes” that can be layered or split across the keyboard range; each scene contains three oscillators with a choice of twelve algorithms, ranging from classic waveforms and wavetables to physical string modeling and the unique “Twist” macro-oscillator.
The modulation system is a standout feature: twelve highly capable LFOs—offering everything from simple waveforms to step sequencers, multi-segment envelopes (MSEGs), and even Lua-scripted modulators—allow for the control of virtually any synthesizer parameter. Rounding out the feature set are two filters with numerous types and routing modes, 43 waveshaper shapes, and 27 effects, including EQs, distortion, modulation, and reverb.
Surge XT runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux in VST3, AU, and CLAP formats, supports MPE and microtuning, and benefits from a community that continuously develops the project, making it one of the most powerful free tools for sound design.
