Description: Saying that Yang Chang is a drummer is like saying that a unicorn is a horse. Of course this is true, but that’s not all. A more appropriate assessment is that Chang is an evolved percussionist: part man, part machine. He uses a complex set of drum triggers to play and manipulate samples live, combining real world drums with abstract sources so that they interact and infect each other. The combination of computer-controlled sounds and the natural rhythm of Chang’s playing is striking. This gives his music a biomechanical quality that is difficult to define. It’s like free jazz, marching band cadenzas, breakcore, and drumming all create a beautiful, rhythm-driven child.
We met Ian at a metal shop and recorded him playing not-so-rudimentary rudiments and polyrhythms on whatever he could find. He hit scrap metal, pipes and cars, which sounded weird. We recorded his performance on a Zoom HR4 with a Sennheiser K6 with an ME66 shotgun mic and ME64 cardioid modules where available. We processed the sounds, cut them into loops and single shots, then turned the most melodic lines into a Kontakt script instrument (which we included in the package) and made even more loops and presets out of it.
Metal Structures is a bonanza for beatmakers. His sounds are equally at home in cinematic music as they are in trap, lo-fi or IDM.
