Description: “Dominus” is a Latin word that means “Lord”. From the abbreviation of the feminine “Domina” comes “Donna”, the modern Italian word for “Woman”. The same word is attested in Old English law for noble ladies who had a title. On the other hand, “Domino” is a popular game born in China, known for its numbered tiles. Focusing on the ideas of creating something both playful and fun, as well as something based on traditional church chants and prayers, we created the Dominus Choir.
When the Fluffyaudio initiative started and our first sample library was released, we were already dreaming about how good it would be to sample a vocal ensemble. Five years have passed since My Piano came out – our first domino. Thanks to our employees and friends, and in addition to our loyal supporters and harsh critics, we have gained a lot of experience. We like to think of all these people as the lifeblood that gave us the energy that kept our ideas flowing even when they were about to stop.
When we thought about sampling the choir, we had no doubts about who we wanted to entrust this task to. Mario Lanaro, whom we had the pleasure of meeting during our years at the University of Verona, had all the qualities we were looking for. With not only a serious and professional classical training, he is a renowned choir conductor, great organist and composer of increasing renown. He has the right balance between leadership, authority, brilliance and rapport, and the sought-after ability to put the people he works with in the right frame of mind to do their best. On the one hand, we wanted the mechanism to run smoothly; on the other hand, we don’t want to lose the freshness of novelty that makes people more caring and responsive. We achieved this by selecting two choirs that had a long history of previous special engagements with Mario Lanaro – so that they already knew each other well.
Again, we wanted to find the right place to sample this special library: something that could be both a church, a concert hall and a recording studio, but at the same time none of those places. That’s why we decided to sample the Dominus Choir in Crema, in the beautiful Sala Giardino. This is the same place that we had the pleasure of discovering and appreciating in our “sessions of Rinascimento”. We started on the eleventh of July with the female vocal ensemble “La Rose”. Usually guided by Mrs. José Borgo, the girls came sparkling in the morning. After an amazing session, we were almost embarrassed rather than pleased. How could men do such a wonderful job and how would they sound compared to these wonderful voices? But we were even more surprised when, after the first day in the men’s choir – and especially after a rich dinner, without saving wine – they continued to sing perfectly in harmony, with the right mood and energy, almost repeating the hellish work of these angelic voices. It’s amazing how differently you can get two identical things from different perspectives. For example, girls almost always twisted their hair with their hands, as if they were painting or pulling magic wires, feeling that in some way these gestures helped them. In contrast, the men of the Novecento Vocal Ensemble, usually directed by Mr. Maurizio Sacchia, stood like the columns of an ancient Roman church.
One of the things we weren’t sure about – even if the conductors reassured us in our preliminary meetings – was the endurance of the singers. We thought that the voice gets tired much faster than any other thing. We planned short recording sessions with lots of breaks, but luckily we were wrong this time. Both “La Rose” and the “Novecento” ensemble gave us a very strong sense of amazement – they sang not only during the session, but even just for pleasure after every lunch and dinner. And because we have discovered that the human voice is one of the most moving instruments, all of our meals almost always ended in tears..!
