From the church balcony to the big stage…
This unique compressor, salvaged from a church balcony in St. Louis in 1995, has become a hallmark of Greg Wells’ work for nearly three decades—from processing vocals in The Greatest Showman to adding intimacy to Adele’s “One and Only.”

Why “Balcony Left”? The piece of tape on the front panel, labeled “Balcony Left,” hints at its humble origins in a Missouri church. As a preacher’s son who grew up listening to a church organ, Greg felt a special connection to the instrument. Greg’s device was remarkable not only for its circuitry, but also for the way it affected musical perception. Rather than smoothing or compressing the sound, it revealed its character. It enhanced the existing sound, adding expressiveness and emotion, allowing the speakers to “disappear” and the music to capture the listener’s attention.

Translating this experience into software required over a year of painstaking work. The result is a faithful recreation of the sound and sensation Greg had relied on for decades, to the point that even he himself could no longer confidently distinguish one from the other.

Balcony Left is not an attempt to recreate existing hardware. It is an attempt to preserve the creative approach and make it accessible to anyone who values musicality over mechanics.
