Description:
The 1967 Sound City One Hundred amplifier (model SC100 or L105) may be the most underrated hero of the late ’60s. It was used by three of the biggest bands of the era—Jimi Hendrix (Jimi Hendrix Experience), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), and Pete Townshend (The Who), and its sound can be heard on some of the most iconic albums in rock history.
This amp is ubiquitous on Hendrix’s Axis: Bold as Love album, it was used by Pete Townshend on Live at Leeds, and Jimmy Page played these amps at many early Led Zeppelin concerts before switching to Hiwatt and then Marshall.
For me, it’s a very personal journey, and along with the REX, it’s one of the most important amps in my collection. The MKI Sound City One Hundred was produced for only two years, in 1967 and 1968, and due to Dave Reeve’s exceptionally high quality standards, only a few were produced. This makes it an extremely rare amp. Furthermore, it appears they rarely sat idle—their lucky owners played them extensively, making them rare in good condition.
This example won’t win a collector’s award because it’s been used extensively, but it sounds simply superb and effortlessly reproduces all the iconic tones mentioned above.
The Sound City One Hundred’s sound can be described as extremely powerful, raw, with incredible punch and clarity, but without any harshness. It’s very dynamic and allows you to achieve a crystal-clear sound even with the right amount of crunch, simply by turning down the guitar’s volume. It offers some of the best clean tones and tones on the verge of overdrive, as well as some of the most furious crunch tones that epitomize the term “kerrang” when playing power chords.
Thanks to a special fixed-bias phase inverter design from Sound City/Hiwatt, it also works incredibly well with pedals, making this stage exceptionally clean and ideal for pedal use.
