Janis Joplin’s music filled our home when her “Pearl” album came out. I was about 12 yrs old in 1971. The music magazines were few. There was Downbeat for jazz, Billboard for pop music, but not many more until the very cool “Circus” magazine appeared.
Poor girl was a target of bullying; a little homely, a computer science geek; her end would come eventually in a broken heart.
She was extremely intelligent. IBM was persistently trying to hire her…… she allegedly knew the language COBOL inside out…… in the 60’s!?!?!?
She had little patience for the tedium of studio recording; all the takes and edits, it never sounded anything like the scorching live recordings. Find the Monterey Pop film, she rips it to shreds 🙂 She and several other bands played impromptu festival gigs across Canada. A promoter leased a train upon which the bands would live. Traveling through Canada, they’d announce the oncoming concerts to stations ahead 🙂
She aggressively took charge of the band. No overdubbing and such foolishness. She made the band set up exactly as they did on stage. It was like “Push that “Record” button and don’t argue with me!!!!!!” I’m pretty sure the whole Pearl album was them playing a festival or club gig in the studio.
Her tragic death was a loss I STILL grieve. She’d gotten into a relationship with a dude who suddenly ditched her. She’d never done heroin, but thought it might take some pain away. She scored, but had NO IDEA how much was too much. Out went that candle…….. really sad loss equal to that of Jimi Hendrix loss. His drug of choice was alcohol. He passed out in his hotel room, on his back. He vomited and drowned in it.
Thanks, amigo for the chance to hear these tracks…… for me it’s the ultimate jamtracks.
