Sampling opens up horizons that once seemed unreachable; the only limit is our imagination. While we aren’t prone to self-praise, we are convinced that Crystal Pianos will become a benchmark for our fellow musicians.
Concept and Backstory
Sampling allows us to achieve the impossible—our only limit is our imagination. While we don’t like to boast, we are confident that Crystal Pianos is likely to become a sampling classic for our fellow musicians. This unusual journey—creating piano-like instruments from individual resonant sources—began 22 years ago for our in-house sampler, Christian Henson. Inspired by John Carpenter’s cult 1974 film Dark Star, Christian had always dreamed of a piano like the one played by the astronaut in the movie, where hammers struck bottles and glasses instead of strings. Shepherd Mapping Innovation and Technology
It wasn’t until 2004, when he was commissioned to score a sci-fi film, that Christian began his often-frustrating attempts to recreate the essence of that scene from the Carpenter classic. It took 22 years of experimentation, but Henson believes we have finally found the solution. Our “Shepherd Mapping” innovation allows for the creation of fully chromatic instruments from individual objects that naturally resonate at only a single pitch.
Materials and Articulations
For this library, we used 18 different glass objects, ranging from wine glasses to tumblers and bowls. Each object was hand-selected for its unique sonic characteristics—from delicate, celesta-like tones to a shimmering glass chorus. Each variation offers five distinct playing styles:
• hyper-detailed strikes
• muted strikes
• slow swells
• fast swells
• friction
Partial Mixer and Controls
Control the sonic characteristics of each object using our unique “partial mixer,” which allows you to adjust the individual sound components of the performance:
• fundamental frequencies (the most audible musical note or root)
• harmonics (surrounding frequencies mapped to chromatic Shepherd tones)
• transients (the initial strike tone that emphasizes the instrument’s material characteristics and remains constant, even when the pitch of other overtones changes)
Applications and Recording Details
Create magical melodies free from the sentimental “Potter-esque” quality often associated with the celesta or glockenspiel. Craft intricate contrapuntal textures or, for instance, oceans of ripples on glass to bring something new and unique to your music. The recording took place at the ultra-dry, low-noise Gorbals Sound Studios in Glasgow, where every note was meticulously selected and performed by our founder, Christian Henson.
