Description:
Parallel compression using a tubular heart.
The Mad Scientist compressor is a parallel RMS compressor built on the simple idea: the stronger the input signal, the more character it produces. Even-harmonic saturation is built directly into the input stage—there’s no separate gain control or menu option. Increase the gain, and the tubes light up, adding a subtle warmth before the signal hits the compressor. Reduce the gain, and the sound becomes cleaner.

Overview
Underneath the steampunk-style enclosure lies a fully functional dynamics processor. A fixed 4:1 ratio ensures musicality without requiring any extra effort. The Mix knob blends the compressed, wet signal with the clean dry signal for natural parallel compression at any setting. The M/S mode processes the mids and side channels independently, so stereo width remains consistent even with heavy compression. Automatic decay adapts depending on the program—fast when the compressor is working hard, slow when it’s virtually silent.
Parallel Compression
All the density. None of the fluff.
The Mix knob blends the compressed, wet signal with the uncompressed dry signal—classic New York-style parallel compression, adjustable from subtle to immersive. The fixed 4:1 ratio is tuned for bus use: musical, predictable, and effortless. Most engineers find the sweet spot somewhere between 60 and 100%.
* Blend – 0 to 100% parallel mixing. 50% = full saturation, unaffected transients.
* Fixed 4:1 ratio – Bus-calibrated, musically transparent.
* Root-Mean-Square (RMS) detection – responds to program energy, not just peaks.
* Automatic release – Full left = program-dependent, constantly adapting.
Input-Driven Saturation
Increase the gain. Hear the difference.
Even-order harmonic saturation built into the input stage—there’s no separate overdrive control because it’s unnecessary. Press the Gain knob, and the tube overlays will gradually glow, while the saturation will smoothly change depending on the signal. Reduce the value, and the sound will become cleaner. Both the wet and dry signals carry the coloration of the input stage, so the harmonic character remains unchanged at any mixing settings.
* Gain control – -12 to +12 dB at the input, affects the degree of saturation.
* Tangent loss factor (tanh) saturation – only even-order harmonics – a warm, non-harsh sound.
* Three-segment CRT meter – linked to input gain, not output level.
* Pre-parallel splitting – saturation is applied to both wet and dry signals.
M/S Processing
Compress the image without folding it.
Switch to M/S mode, and the plugin will encode your stereo signal into mid and side channels, compress them independently, and then decode them back to stereo. The center channel remains under control, while the side channels “breathe”—no loss of width or monophonic sound. Useful for full mixes, wide stereo buses, and anywhere parallel compression in L/R mode begins to narrow the soundstage.
* M/S switch – switches between L/R and Mid/Side processing.
* Independent compression – separate processing of the mid and side channels.
* Width preservation – the sides are compressed independently, without affecting the center.
