The recording process for “Mechanicals” was a fascinating journey. We spent a significant amount of time tracking down a collector of truly rare, vintage, eccentric, and captivating machines—including a successor to the famous Enigma machine—who provided us with some truly unique sounds. Wherever there was mechanical action, we were there with our microphones to capture it. We recorded everything from delicate, intricate mechanisms to massive industrial machines, as well as long-forgotten coin-operated devices from the 1900s—such as chocolate vending machines, automated writing devices, and vintage typewriters.
