Description: Schlap: cool, aggressive compressor plugin
Caelum describes Schlap as a “characteristic, colorful and aggressive sounding” compressor. It’s a modern take on vintage software-specific compressors, with a user interface that looks overtly “digital” but hides an analog soul. The program dependent compressor automatically adjusts the attack and decay parameters by detecting the peak RMS of the average volume of the incoming sound. In this way, sudden short peaks and early transients remain uncompressed and compensate for harsh sound.
Schlap’s clean GUI includes controls for input level, threshold, ratio and bend for the compressor section. The other set of controls is for the side chain signal – you can select an internal filter or feed in external audio and then apply variable high and low pass filters. Auto-Gain and Stereo Link options are available above the sidechain section. An output level knob and three visualizers complete the interface.
The ratio control has four ranges: 0.1:1 to 0.9:1 for the expansion and gate effects; 1:1 to 20:1 for standard compression; ∞:1 for infinite compression limitation and -20:1 to -1:1 for characteristic overcompression.
All in all, this is an interesting compressor with a fresh take on old concepts and great versatility. If you are looking for a transparent compressor or an identical imitation of a specific device, then Schlap is a good choice and does the job well!
