The 808 is easily the most recognizable drum machine in history. It is responsible for the birth of countless genres—hip-hop, electro, techno, house, and a variety of subgenres too numerous to mention. Although created in the early 1980s, it remains highly relevant with a modern sound, heard on everything from Lil Jon’s Dirty South radio hits to underground techno 12-inch records. We took our 808 and recorded it through a massive SSL 4000 console (a desk featuring incredible dynamics and EQ sections used on countless hip-hop records since the 80s).
