ABBEY ROAD 50s DRUMMER is a new instrument for KONTAKT containing the sounds of two classic drum kits from the 1950s. These sound sets provide the characteristic drum sounds of the era, when drums competed with the increasingly popular electric instruments.
Recorded on authentic equipment at Abbey Road Studios in London, 50s DRUMMER includes a groove library, mixer presets, and a new set of brush sounds, delivering an authentic feel for 1950s rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, country, and jazz.
ABBEY ROAD 50s DRUMMER features rare instruments from the earliest years of popular music. The first kit, from the early 1950s, is a Gretsch Cadillac Green Nitron drum kit with a 20″ bass drum, 12″ alto tom, and 14″ floor tom. The toms in this kit are tuned low, producing a smooth, open sound that allows the kit to sit perfectly in a mix among electric instruments. The second kit, from the late 1950s, is a WFL kit. It includes a 20″ bass drum, 12″ and 13″ alto toms, and a 16″ baritone floor tom. The WFL toms are tuned high, producing a brighter tone that complements the Gretsch kit well. Each kit contains three different snares from the same period, providing sonic variety and additional customization options. The kits also include a set of period cymbals β Zildjian A and K series β for an authentic vintage sound.
50s DRUMMER was recorded in the legendary Studio 2. London’s Abbey Road. Along with traditional microphone equipment, vintage RCA 44-BX and AKG D12 microphones, a REDD.17 vacuum tube mixing console and a vacuum tube tape recorder were used to create the library.
New variations of brush sounds and their varied performance articulations were also recorded specifically for 50s DRUMMER to showcase the characteristic playing techniques of the era.
The extensive groove library includes samples of early rock ‘n’ roll, R&B, country, and jazz, as well as a variety of modern rhythms. This allows users to create both sketches and finished drum recordings.
Regardless of genre, producers looking to add an original ’50s flavor to their work will benefit from high-quality recordings, ease of use, and attention to detail.
