Originally created for Richard Wagner’s operas, this somber instrument is ideal for adding depth and atmospheric darkness to orchestral textures. The Wagner tuba combines the tonal qualities of the French horn and tuba, creating a unique, mysterious sound. Recorded in its purest form on our purpose-built “Silent Stage” with its dense, controlled acoustics, this rare and exceptional instrument brings a touch of operatic epicness to your recordings.
A Composer’s Vision
From 1849 to 1858, Richard Wagner lived in exile in Switzerland, drawing inspiration from the beauty of nature. During this period, he began composing his monumental four-opera cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen. For this, he conceived a unique wind instrument sound, combining the timbral qualities of the French horn and trombone.
A Powerful Hybrid Sound
With its unique combination of the two instruments, this tuba—more like a French horn—stands out for combining the richness of the French horn with the directness of the trombone. Its unique character and Wagner-endorsed epicness make it not only special but also a captivating addition to timbral projects beyond opera.
Versatility and Expressiveness
The library includes a full set of expressive and dynamic articulations, offering various short and long notes, legato (including fast legato), crescendo and diminuendo, sfz, sffz, pfp, and tongue tremolo. Recording samples in relatively dry form on the Silent Stage allows you to place them anywhere in your virtual stage and stereo field, and integrate the instrument with the Synchron series using the built-in convolution reverb, which recreates our own Vienna Synchron Stage.
