Radiohead is a British rock band from Oxfordshire. The band was founded in 1985, and its line-up has not changed since then. Radiohead’s style is traditionally defined as alternative rock, although at different stages the sound varied from Britpop to art rock and electronic music.
The debut single “Creep” was released in 1992 and at first went unnoticed, but became a hit after the release of the album Pablo Honey (1993). The Bends (1995) made Radiohead popular in the UK, and their third album, OK Computer (1997), which dealt with social alienation, brought Radiohead worldwide success and is considered one of the most significant rock albums of the 1990s. In 2000 and 2001, the musicians recorded two experimental albums, Kid A and Amnesiac. After the release of Hail to the Thief, Radiohead’s contract with the major label EMI expired, and the musicians posted their next album, In Rainbows, for free download on the Internet. Their latest album, The King of Limbs, was released in 2011. Radiohead have had a major influence on modern rock music. As of the end of 2008, Radiohead’s albums have sold approximately 28 million copies. In 2005, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Radiohead as the 73rd greatest musician in history.
