Woodwinds have been an integral part of film music for decades, playing a vital role in creating some of the most memorable cinematic moments. Iconic composers such as Ennio Morricone, John Williams, and Howard Shore have successfully utilized the melodic and distinctive timbres of these instruments in their compositions.
More details
Now you can enjoy the grandeur of the big screen and the unique sound of the flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon in your own projects—recorded and sampled to perfection with the highest level of realism at Hollywood’s proven Synchron Stage Vienna. It’s simply inspiration for creating your masterpiece, step by step, breath by breath.
A gentle and smooth melody
These qualities often make brass instruments the best choice when a smooth melody is needed to convey meaning. This collection of brass instruments is imbued with the atmosphere of the big (and small) screen – in the truest sense of the word, as one of the virtuoso flutists whose parts are perfectly used in the samples is Veronika Vitazkova of the Vienna Synchronized Orchestra, who has toured with maestro Ennio Morricone himself and regularly creates music for television and film (True Detective: Night Country or Marvel’s Moon Knight), as well as participating in various recording projects (Cluster Ensemble plays Philip Glass).
Lyrical and Virtuosic Legato
One of the key brass playing techniques, especially frequently used by the great masters of film music, is legato. Each note flows smoothly into the next, as if it were one, creating an endless canvas of sound. In addition to regular and fast legato, lyrical legato offers a slower, slightly more pronounced, and surprisingly natural transition between notes at slow and medium tempos. The “virtuoso legato” feature is specifically designed for fast phrases. The “automatic speed adjustment” feature in Vienna Synchron Player ensures authentic transitions between notes, depending on the tempo of your playing.
Capturing the Breath of Music
Recording any instrument is always a challenge, but woodwinds often present an even greater challenge. They require first-class acoustics to reveal their inherent magic. Fortunately, Synchron Stage is the perfect environment for capturing the breath of music. When renowned composer, orchestrator, and conductor Conrad Pope (who has worked for many years with, among others, John Williams) stepped onto our A-stage, he joyfully exclaimed that this was finally a large enough and especially high enough recording stage for the piccolo to sound as magnificent as it should. Of course, all the other woodwind instruments also benefit greatly from the hall’s superb acoustics, making the Synchron Stage’s sound signature in film music.
Wind Ensembles
The Synchron Woodwinds album also includes ensemble recordings featured in the Big Bang Orchestra Packs Neptune, Orion, and Solaris. The extensive “Tutti Woodwinds” ensemble consists of 13 instruments, from piccolo to contrabassoon, playing in unison and octaves. Each “wind section,” including flutes, oboes, B-flat clarinets, and bassoons, consists of three musicians playing together in unison. The “Low FX Woodwinds” section, consisting of three contrabassoons, two bassoons, one contrabass clarinet, and two bass clarinets, delivers dramatic low fundamental frequencies in unison and octaves, as well as in clusters. The “High FX Woodwinds” section features one piccolo, three flutes, two oboes, and four clarinets, playing long notes in unison and octaves, as well as passages and arpeggios across a wide variety of scales and chords.
