Trance emerged as a style in 1992, with Germany and Belgium (German labels Eye Q, MFS, and the Belgian R&S) at its center. Trance peaked in 1993-1994. But by 1995, it had virtually faded away, giving way to various forms of hard trance and Goa.
Trance is characterized by a straightforward, light rhythm in the 126-145 bpm range, with prominent keyboard and string themes. It is generally quite melodic, although it is typically built on the repetition of a single musical phrase.
