Description: The Tbilat is a traditional Moroccan hand percussion instrument consisting of a pair of large and small clay pot drums joined together, with goatskin heads and tendon wraps. It is also often called “Tamtam” or simply “clay pot drums”. Tbilats typically have a tight, crisp sound, similar to bongos, but with a snappy, cool, and deep tonality.
The Kingdom of Morocco is located in North Africa, just across the Strait of Gibraltar from Spain. Known for its coastlines, mountains and desert deserts, it has been continuously inhabited for over 100,000 years, with deep cultural, artistic and musical roots that span all of known human history. The intricate designs of pots and wrappers and the tonal versatility of these instruments are a fine example of this long and rich artistic heritage.
We recorded our big pair of tbilat in a dry studio with bare hands and fingers. We recorded each articulation with an average of 6 or more dynamic velocity layers and 10 circular variations per note. We then recorded a second session with the instrument in a large reverberant slab and stone chamber at close range. The closed position maintains a strong presence but offers an open and lively atmosphere, while the distant position creates a feeling of lush, cavernous space and distance. Both of these wet rooms are ideal for orchestral arrangements and more atmospheric songwriting.
In addition, we also manipulated our original tbilat recordings into 12 unique sound banks, each with a speed layer and many robin variations to note. These stylized beats, stings, boomers and atmospheric beats are great for cinematic encoding, video game and multimedia sound design, EDM music and hybrid compositions. All of these joints and sound sets are available in a master preset, with independent joint alignment, mixing and switching right at your fingertips.
