Description: Filters are an extremely important tool in a producer’s toolbox, whether for mixing, sound design, or adding interest and variation to an arrangement. In this course from Producertech instructor Rob Jones, you’ll learn all the basics, as well as a range of techniques for applying static and dynamic filtering to all types of sounds in your mix. The course begins with an overview of the various ways to use filters, followed by a guide to the basic filter types and standard controls. This is followed by a demonstration of numerous static filters applied to all sounds in the relaxed, downtempo groove of the course project.
Once the basics are covered, Rob moves on to more advanced topics, introducing various types of filter modulation, with envelopes and LFOs. Once again, after covering the theory, he returns to the course project to demonstrate how various dynamically modulated filters can be applied to various sounds, explaining the rationale behind them along the way.
Other techniques covered include controlling filters with external signals using sidechain, modulating third-party plugins using Max 4 Live’s instruments, working with pattern filters in software like Cableguys Shaperbox, and much more. Examples are shown again both in the project and in the bass processing section.
