A digital Soviet synthesizer organ from the 1980s.
More details
In our journey into the past, we delve even further and now present an artifact from the final years of the Soviet era of stagnation and the subsequent upheavals of Perestroika – a compact electric organ called “Lell.”
We’ve gone to great lengths to not only authentically recreate this instrument, but also to imbue it with a realistic, almost acoustic sound, while meticulously preserving its analog essence with the utmost care and respect.
SOUND CREATION
This instrument is available in seven different variants. Each has its own X-slider, which blends four distinct sound layers. All these sounds are based on the original organ sound and were processed using a tape recorder:
Direct
The original organ sound, recorded using a vintage preamp and equalizer from a 1973 EAG console, made in Hungary.
Clean Tape
Direct signal recorded on a vintage reel-to-reel tape recorder. High-quality tape adds an analog edge, creating a softer, more subtle sound.
Tape Break
This version was recorded on a P-180-M, a Soviet spy reel-to-reel tape recorder from the 1960s. The low speed and vintage Soviet tape create a dreamy, mysterious sound.
Wire
Recorded using a Soviet MN-61 wire tape recorder. The wire gives the organ a nostalgic, noisy, and unique tone.
Amplifier
This is how an organ would sound at a live concert or in a studio recording. The sound is softer and more realistic compared to the straight version.
Modular
A modern interpretation in which the sound waves of a Soviet organ are processed using Eurorack modules. This creates a natural, ever-changing sound, at times reminiscent of a trumpet or trombone.
Stylized Direct Sound
This organ sound, styled after an electric piano, is also created using modular synthesizers, analog filters, and tube compressors.
INSIDE THE INSTRUMENT
Source
The main sound is shaped by four sliders controlling the organ’s drawbars, each with its own panning slider. The instrument has seven patches, each containing four additional sound layers, blended with the original sound using an X slider. We used a combination of vintage and modern equipment to ensure these layers sound organic while simultaneously emphasizing the fundamental tone from all angles.
Effects
Classic effects with a vintage sound. The Rotary effect combines phaser, flanger, and tremolo for a Leslie-like effect. The Saturator effect offers nonlinear distortion, and the classic ring modulator works in mono or stereo, providing endless possibilities for experimentation. Echo and Reverb effects with filtering options for the processed signal create a truly immersive sound. Combined with the filter and shelving EQ on the master panel, you can achieve any sound imaginable, from soft, mysterious, dark ambient pulses to sharp, ringing cosmic tones.
Movement
The Movement panel features a 12-step, easily customizable sequencer and two LFO modules—the heart of our instrument—that can be connected to all key elements.
Master
The master panel includes two vintage octave filters that split the signal into 10 and 16 bands, as well as a three-band shelving EQ with adjustable crossover frequencies. Pitch, noise level, and output controls are also included.
