Description : Original Synclavir is a digital synthesizer combining several synthesis options: additive, FM, and also the so-called Timbre Frame – in fact it is a resynthesis technology based on combining arbitrary micro-samples into a chain in an arbitrary sequence. Synclavir was actually created as a computer based on a 16-bit microprocessor that connected to a simple five-octave keyboard. The instrument was used by Michael Jackson, Steve Wonder, Sting, Frank Zappa, Chick Coria, John McLaughlin, Oscar Peterson, Tony Banks, Mark Knopfler and many others. Hollywood composer Alan Silvestri with the help of Sinclavier created music for the films “Cat’s Eye” and “Predator.”
The basis of sound formation in Siklavir is the “partial tone method” (Partial Timbre). Each such partial tone can have its own timbral character. Full sound is created by combining several such components. In the prototype, four partial tones were used, while the virtual instrument uses 12 partial tones.
The possibilities of sound formation of a virtual instrument are almost endless, but, of course, it takes a lot of work to realize them. Some idea of the potential of the instrument can be compiled from factory presets, of which a huge number is recorded, but they do not cover the full range of its capabilities. Some presets show exactly the complex chains of samples, with a multifaceted and long “sweep” timbre. In general, as always, everything depends on the imagination and assiduity of the musician.
