Description:
This British-made 30-watt Class AB amplifier is one of the three most iconic amplifier models from FMV.
This particular example is a copper-panel integrated amplifier, of which only about 50 were produced in head format. It has a particularly musical sound that can put any Plexi amp to shame.
Thanks to the absence of negative feedback, cathode bias, and an EL84 tube section, it has a unique character. The sound is sharp, raw, and slightly lacking in bass, but it also produces a beautifully compressed, detailed, and yet quite smooth overdrive under heavy loads. It transitions from the signature crisp clean tone to powerful overdrive, retaining more detail and string separation than some big tube amps.
It has a somewhat unusual but quite versatile tone stack, where the bass roll-off feature is very useful if you want to really push the amp to a natural overdrive without pedals.
Countless TB30 users include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page), Radiohead, Rory Gallagher, Queen (Brian May), John Scofield, U2 (The Edge), Oasis, Foo Fighters, Ritchie Blackmore, Anna Calvi, Mark Knopfler, Hank Marvin, Muse, and many others.
We prefer this amp with EH power amplifier tubes and NOS Mullard preamp tubes. NOTE!
Core DI kits contain the core tones (bright, balanced, and warm EQ settings) for a specific amplifier.
Expansion DI kits contain additional tones (thin, thick, and rolled-off EQ settings).
Core DI kits contain cabinet impulse responses recorded close with a microphone, while Expansion DI kits contain “room speaker” cabinet impulse responses, which require an external impulse response loader for the full 1-2 seconds of the file. “Room speaker” impulse responses are designed for use with cabinets recorded close with a microphone to achieve the most realistic room sound.
