Description:
discoDSP OPL emulates Yamaha OPL chips—the FM synthesis technology used in AdLib and Sound Blaster soundtracks during the late 80s and 90s. It is a classic 2-operator FM synthesizer featuring all eight OPL3 waveforms and a percussion mode, expanded to support multi-operator patches based on eight YMF262 chips. Features include 16x oversampling, over 11,000 instruments, and support for SBI, WOPL, and TX81Z imports.

Overview :
Built upon the YMF262 (OPL3) architecture. Classic patches utilize two-operator channels—reminiscent of AdLib and Sound Blaster games—while multi-operator patches employ channel pairs to create four-operator configurations. An array of eight chips (providing 144 channels) enables the creation of more complex patches and unison effects for chords.

Each operator features its own waveform, frequency multiplier, ADSR envelope, decay settings, key scaling, and velocity response. Eight waveforms are available per operator: sine, half-sine, absolute sine, quarter-sine, variable sine, “camel” sine, square, and logarithmic sawtooth. This specific set of waveforms defines the unique character of OPL synthesis, as a simple sine wave alone would not suffice.

Multi-operator mode allows for up to four modulators and four carriers per note. Choose from eight algorithms (FM, Additive, 3-Stack, 4-Stack, “Two Pairs,” “Stack + Sine,” “One-to-Three,” “Three Pairs”) or design your own using the Yamaha-style algorithm editor: drag a modulator to connect it to others, click a connection line to remove it, and click an operator to edit its parameters. Each patch is compiled into 2-operator and 4-operator chip channels. Multi-operator instruments are saved in the .sbix format, which remains compatible with other tools that recognize the standard SBI format. The package includes over 11,000 instruments: a categorized SBI library, 4-op and OPL3 banks created for computer games, General MIDI sets from classic game soundtracks, and Yamaha TX81Z voices. WOPL and WOPLX banks (OPL3 Bank Editor, libADLMIDI), OPLI instruments, and SysEx dumps from the TX81Z, DX21, DX27, and DX100 load without conversion, with levels normalized so that 4-op patches match 2-op ones. SBI presets (the Creative Labs instrument format for Sound Blaster cards) can be loaded via drag-and-drop.

A percussion mode adds a bass drum, snare, tom-tom, cymbal, and hi-hat, each mapped to specific operator slots and waveforms.
An AN1x-style unison mode stacks five detuned layers per note—featuring 32-step detune depth and stereo spread—while pitch-based panning distributes notes across the stereo field according to their pitch. The output stage includes a master volume control (ranging from -48 to +12 dB) and a Valve or Tape saturator that processes only the peaks. Support is provided for MPE, sustain pedals, and sample-accurate MIDI.

The emulation runs on a rewritten engine incorporating our own proprietary developments. The chip itself undergoes 16x oversampling to eliminate the aliasing artifacts common in FM synthesis at high modulation settings; additionally, pitch, envelope timing, and key scaling are adjusted to ensure patches sound consistent across all settings. Offline reverberation uses a linear-phase filter with a specified latency, ensuring that the rendered output matches what you heard during playback. Inactive chips and channels are skipped, so CPU usage depends on the actual audio content.
