Known for its warm, rounded sound, the cornet is an integral part of brass bands and concert pieces. Its versatility makes it equally at home in solos, ensemble performances, and jazz improvisation. With a softer sound than the trumpet, it excels in lyrical solos filled with rich harmonics. Whether you’re inspired by Bix Beiderbecke or exploring new creative possibilities for the cornet in your own projects, the clean, dry recordings from our “Silent Stage” are sure to inspire you.

From Military to Modern

Due to its wide, conical bore, the cornet (French: cornet a pistons) is classified as a French horn, although its appearance is more reminiscent of a trumpet. The first cornet was created around 1828 by Louis Antoine Galary in France and initially played a historical role in military and marching bands. The instrument later found its way into symphony orchestras during the Romantic era, sometimes replacing the trumpet in certain compositions.

Merge into the ensemble or stand out

Compared to the trumpet, the cornet has a softer, more mellow sound due to its design, although it has a somewhat more limited dynamic range. This quality allows it to fit perfectly into brass ensembles. Its unique timbre also makes it an interesting choice for creative solos and improvisation.

Versatile and expressive

The library includes a full range of expressive and dynamic articulations, offering various short and long notes, legato (including fast legato), crescendo and diminuendo, sfz, sffz, pfp, tongue tremolo, and trills of semitones and whole tones. Recording samples in a relatively dry form on the Silent Stage allows you to place them anywhere in your virtual stage and stereo field, and integrate the instrument with the Synchron series using an internal convolution reverb that recreates our own Vienna Synchron Stage.

• Short and long notes, legato, dynamics, trills, repetitions, tongue tremolo
• Recorded on Silent Stage
