Description: Sonic Academy proudly welcomes this week’s new instructor, Soul Techno producer Harvey McKay.
In How To Make Techno 2019, Harvey takes us through his creative process for creating a dark, brooding, and downright sinister techno track from start to finish in Ableton.
Starting with a layered, distorted, and saturated kick, we build tension with a rumbling bassline, pitched and crunchy hi-hats, and a snare before adding a sinister synth mainline created in U-he Repro. Once the elements are in place, we build sound sequences in Ableton before recording, as if playing live, to lay out the basic arrangement. We then tackle the automation and editing from beginning to end, leading to the final mix, when everything can be sent to mastering. This course proves that you don’t need a ton of plugins and gimmicks to create a killer dancefloor mix; just carefully choosing the right sounds with minimal processing will get you there!
