Description: Multitrack of the song ABC by The Jackson 5.
The Jackson 5 (also The Jackson Five, The Jackson 5ive, later The Jacksons) is an American band from Gary, Indiana. Brothers Jackie, Tito, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael Jackson were part of the core group, which was created after the performance of The Jackson Brothers, which included the three older brothers.
During its existence from 1964 to 1989, the group performed music in various styles: rhythm and blues, soul, popular music and later disco. During their six and a half years on the Motown Records label, The Jackson 5 became one of the greatest popular music phenomena of the 1970s. The group also became the launching pad for the solo careers of Jermaine and Michael, the youngest brother, who went on to surpass the success of his early solo career with Motown Records to achieve greater fame as an adult artist. The Jackson 5 were the first group in history to have their first four singles (“I Want You Back”, “ABC”, “The Love You Save”, and “I’ll Be There”) top the American charts. Several later singles (“Mama’s Pearl”, “Never Can Say Goodbye”, and “Dancing Machine”) became Top 5 pop hits and number one hits on the R&B singles chart. Most of the early hits were written and produced by a specialized company, The Corporation; later Jackson 5 hits were produced primarily by Hal Davis. Although the group’s early hits were compiled by employees of Gamble and Huff, the Jacksons have written and produced their own songs since the 1970s. It is significant that the Jacksons became the first black performers whose audience consisted equally of white and black fans. This happened partly due to the professional PR policy of Berry Gordy, who served as CEO of the Motown Records label.
In 1976, with the departure of Motown Records to CBS, the group was forced to change its name and lineup – Randy Jackson took the place of his brother Jermaine, who chose to stay with Motown. After two years spent on the Philadelphia International Records label, the Jacksons signed a contract with Epic Records and defended their rights to create songs, promotional products and image. Their success continued in the 1980s, when they released hits such as “Shake Your Body (Down to the Ground)”, “Lovely One”, and “State of Shock”.
The 1989 album “2300 Jackson Street” was recorded without Michael and Marlon, however, their names were on the track list. Disappointingly low sales of the group’s album led to the termination of their contract with the Jacksons’ record label. The group never formally broke up, but from that point onwards they were effectively inactive, although all five brothers performed together at Michael’s two 9/11 memorial shows.
