B.B. King (real name Riley B. King; September 16, 1925, Itta Bena, Mississippi) is an American blues guitarist, singer, and songwriter, whom fans call the king of the blues.
According to one critic, “B.B. King introduced us to a sophisticated guitar solo style based on smooth bending and brilliant vibrato that influenced virtually every follower of electric guitar blues.” One of his most famous compositions is “The Thrill Is Gone” (1969).
Critical acclaim and widespread fame have earned him the reputation of being the most respected, successful, and recognizable bluesman not only in the United States but around the world. According to a 2003 Rolling Stone poll, B.B. King was ranked #3 on the list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and the greatest living guitarist.
Riley B. King was born near Itta Bene, Mississippi, on September 16, 1925. Like many other Delta bluesmen, he began his professional life as a tenant farmer, playing guitar in his spare time.
As a musician, B.B. King first arrived in Memphis in 1946, but after a few months of hard living, he returned to Mississippi. He decided to better prepare for his next trip, which he took two years later. He first worked at the local R&B radio station WDIA as a singer and disc jockey. There he earned the nickname “Beale Street Blues Boy,” later shortened to “B.B.” During this time, he met T-Bone Walker.
