During the brutal chaos of World War II, Steinway & Sons , unable to make pianos due to wartime metal restrictions, converted its factory to producing coffins and glider parts. It then received a contract to build over 3,000 “Victory Pianos”—sturdy instruments in blue, gray, and khaki. They were parachuted onto battlefields along with tuning kits to comfort American soldiers. From 1942 to 1953, these “Army Steinways” brought joy and unity to the fighting force, allowing soldiers to sing, smile, and remember home, their music becoming a symbol of hope.
Recorded at Hans Zimmer’s Remote Control Productions studio in Santa Monica, this instrument is one of the few surviving “Victory Pianos.” Following a recent restoration, it is a unique working model whose scars from a turbulent past are reflected in the character of its exceptional sound.
