Sting (real name Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner, born October 2, 1951, Newcastle upon Tyne) is a British rock musician and actor, the leader of the band The Police in 1976-1984. Since 1984, he has been performing solo.
He was born on October 2, 1951 in the port city of Newcastle upon Tyne, a large industrial center in the north of England. His father, Ernest Matthew Sumner, worked for many years as an assembler in a local engineering company. Later, he acquired a small dairy store. His mother, Audrey, worked as a hairdresser and a nurse.
She had a classical musical education and managed to develop her son’s natural abilities by teaching him to play the piano at home. He was offered a serious course of study at a music school, but Sting was really attracted to jazz and the guitar.
After a meager income as a road worker and music teacher, Sting had the opportunity to move to London and play professionally. He was noticed by American drummer Stewart Copeland, who convinced him to take up rock.
