Description: This edition of Splice Sessions was recorded at Laboutique Studios Dakar with Sidi Coita, an internationally renowned balafonist who plays with the National Orchestra of Senegal and many other acts. Coita, a member of the Grio family in the Mandinka community of Senegal, celebrates the marriage of traditional Senegalese instruments with modern musical techniques. It gives him great joy to see his beloved balafon, with whom he was brought up, included in modern music around the world.
Mandanka balafon, also called bala or balafon, is a kind of idiophone (an instrument that creates sound through vibration). In the West, this can be compared to a xylophone. The balafon is reinforced with small pumpkins under the keys with small layers of film covering the holes to create a unique buzzing sound. The instrument can create a one-person effect with rich and full sound.
