Bamblong is a small intonating percussion instrument, similar, in principle, to a marimba. It has 4 bamboo resonance chambers, approximately ranging from 1 – 2 inches wide and 8 – 14 inches long, with sound holes at the top of each. The playing surfaces are thin pieces of bamboo strung on pegs above each bamboo cane. It came with a set of hammers, with flat, round tips that could be cut from bicycle tires. It has a very clear, soft, rattling sound with a short sustain. It was recorded with and without reverb. Closely spaced microphones were used to produce a sensitive, warm, present sound. The instrument is sampled exhaustively, with approximately 20 dynamic layers per note and 10 cycle variations per layer. Jazz Nylon Brushes were also recorded. As an added bonus, a large selection of reverb pulses is included.
