Description: Kobyz is an ancient bowed string instrument of the Turkic peoples. Kobyz is a traditional Kazakh instrument with roots in shamanic culture. Made of wood and camel skin with horsehair strings, it has a unique timbre that can imitate the human voice, the sounds of wind, water and animals. This sample pack, recorded in Ankara by Tokzhan Karatay, is based on traditional pieces of Kazakh culture, where the kobyz imitates totem animals such as horses and swans.
Tokzhan Karatay is a composer and musician from Kazakhstan dedicated to preserving and renewing the traditions of kobyz through performance and teaching. Combining a deep knowledge of folklore with a passion for experimental classical music, she strives to overcome cultural differences in her compositions.
