“Modes” can be a challenge to grasp, but one of the key points I was given eons ago was that “mode” and “mood” are quite relevant. Another method that helped was to think of players/bands and the stylish scales you’ll frequently hear in their compositions and soloing. Carlos Santana/Dorian has the Latin romantic feel. Al Dimeola/Phrygian has the mystical Middle Eastern edge. Jerry Garcia/Mixolydian in the Grateful Dead’s uplifting sound. Joe Satriani/Lydian in many of his instrumental works.
